On a call this past Monday, my colleagues Terri Byrd (CBF Alabama) and Jody Long (CBF Georgia), and I had a difficult discussion about the in-person regional event for this year’s CBF General Assembly. We ended up coming to the very difficult decision to cancel the regional, in-person gathering. We are sending the following letter to all who have registered for the in-person event, and I wanted you to see it, as well.
It is with heavy hearts that we regret to inform you that the in-person regional gathering will not take place on Thursday, August 26, through Friday, August 27. Most of us are aware that COVID-19 cases are dramatically rising in our southeastern states (Alabama, Florida, and Georgia), stressing our hospital and medical staffs, worrying many of our partners, and straining the emotions of so many neighbors, friends, and loved ones.
Several months ago when we originally began planning this experience, we were excited at the prospect of seeing our CBF friends and family from around our states and region. The three state coordinators excitedly planned times of in-person interaction and fellowship to coincide with the excellent virtual offerings of the CBF General Assembly. Sadly, however, as our region and country enter into yet another COVID-19 surge, this time with breakthrough infections possible for even vaccinated persons, we felt that we could not host an in-person event that would draw so many of you from different areas of our region.
Our deep hope is that we will be able to provide some experiences in the very near future that would allow for CBF supporters and congregations from our various states to gather across state lines to build friendships, strengthen relationships, and encourage one another in our faith. Be on the lookout for these opportunities soon.
For now, there are a few of things you should do:
If you made hotel reservations, please contact the hotel and cancel your reservation. We will close the block of hotel rooms but you will need to actually contact the hotel to cancel the reservation.
Set your alarm clock for Friday, August 27, at 8:30 am (EDT)/ 7:30 am (CDT) for your state’s virtual gathering time during the CBF General Assembly. Your state coordinator will be contacting you very soon with virtual log-in information so you can still see friends from afar.
Follow the CBF’s announcements concerning the virtual offerings during this year’s General Assembly. You can find more information at www.cbf.net/general-assembly.
We will miss seeing you in a few weeks; but, please know that our prayers are with you and those whom you love as we all discern the best way forward for our communities’ health and vitality.
Yours in Christ,
Ray Johnson (CBF Florida Coordinator)
Terri Byrd (CBF Alabama Coordinator)
Jody Long (CBF Georgia Coordinator)
